About READI and the READI Group

READI is an acronym for Respect, Equity, Accessibility, Diversity, and Inclusion.

We are an interest and action group at Dalhousie University, located in Kjipuktuk within Mi'kma'ki, which is the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq. Kjipuktuk is also known as Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada.

The READI Group was founded in 2021 by Raghav Sampangi, Gabriella Mosquera, and Carla Heggie, who are educators at Dalhousie University's Faculty of Computer Science. Currently, Raghav and Gabriella are continuing this work.

We work on projects related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, and where possible, strive to advocate for, and develop structures and recommendations for, tangible and sustainable systemic change, to foster inclusion and belonging in our community.

We base our work on the following key values:

  • Action, access, and accountability
  • Building trust within the community through action
  • Collaboration
  • Diversity of views and approaches to problem solving

Projects

Sessions on EDIA (2023 - )

Since March 2023, we have been organizing reflection and discussion sessions on aspects of EDIA. These sessions are monthly and are structured to have a brief presentation on the topic, followed by interactive discussion and optional activities. We have been collaborating with the Culture of Respect Committee at the Faculty of Computer Science in this project.

EDIA Prompts for Faculty Search (2022)

Based on lessons that we have learned through our 3C Fellowship, we developed a set of reflection prompts for the EDIA statement that was required to be submitted by interested candidates. These questions went beyond generic a EDIA statement and allowed candidates to reflect on specific questions, based on the needs of the search.

READI Recommendations (Living document)

We developed a set of recommendations to develop inclusive courses. These recommendations come with actionable examples, which make it easier for educators to think about how inclusive (and healthy) course elements can be built. These examples also give an opportunity to think about how to customize each recommendation to any course you may teach!

Interest & Action

Based on lessons that we have learned through our 3C Fellowship and lived experiences, we take projects and where possible, advocate for changes in academic practices, to ensure that our workplaces and classrooms foster inclusive practices.

It is all of our collective responsibility to foster a culture of kindness and inclusion. If you'd like to work with us...
